Edward Orato is the son of an agricultural field officer and a secretary, grew up in the Lower Railways neighborhood of downtown Kisumu with his four sisters and one brother.  When Edward's mother would bring the newspaper home at night, he would spend hours recreating the animations and developed his passion by helping his mother make tablecloths with unique designs and patterns.  Edward further refined his talent as a student at Mwangaza Art School from 1997 to 1999, where he also led the children's art program.

In 2000, Edward opened his studio in Craft Alley  where he has built a popular reputation over many years.  His work is inspired by everyday scenes from western Kenya and Lake Victoria.  Orato has become well known among tourists and locals for his ability to craft beautiful and unique works upon request.
